Oklahoma trailed the Horned Frogs 21-7 early in the second quarter before Mayfield led the Sooners on a 42-3 run to take a 49-24 lead into the fourth quarter. OU held on to win 52-46 in its Big 12 opener.

The Austin, Texas, native completed 23 of his 30 passes for 274 yards and touchdowns of 67 and 40 yards. The redshirt junior ranks 16th nationally with his 9.28 yards per pass attempt.

Mayfield, who finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting a year ago, also added 55 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 12 carries. It marked the second time (Tulsa last year) in his career that Mayfield recorded multiple touchdowns both passing and rushing in a single game.

This marks the third career Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week honor for Mayfield. The first came after he set a school single-game record for total offense with 572 yards and tied a school record with six total touchdowns in Oklahoma’s 52-38 win over Tulsa in 2015.

Weeks later, Mayfield was honored again after he completed 24-of-34 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns while adding 74 rushing yards and a score to push the Sooners past No. 4 Baylor, 44-34, in Waco. The win snapped a 20-game home winning streak for the Bears and catapulted OU to the forefront of the College Football Playoff race.

Mayfield has accounted for 54 touchdowns as a Sooner, the most by a player in the first 17 games of an OU career. Through four games this season, Mayfield ranks 14th nationally in pass efficiency (168.1) and has thrown for 1,067 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 67.8 percent of his passes.

Each week during the regular season, an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Player of the Week is selected by a committee leading up to the finalists’ announcement in December. Mayfield was a finalist for the award in 2015.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, founded in 2012, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, tenacity and community. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or a four-year Division I Texas college.

The No. 20/22 Sooners (2-2, 1-0) are back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. CT when they take on Texas (2-2, 0-1) in the 111th version of the Red River Showdown at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
