Police shot and killed a man early Tuesday who they said was holding a two-year-old child hostage in a south Tulsa home.

Officers were called to the home in the 4300 block of South 170th East Avenue just before 11:45 p.m. Monday.

They arrived and were met by a woman, her three children and her boyfriend who told police her estranged husband forced his way inside her home. Everyone got away but the 2-year-old girl. When they fled, the 44-year-old man grabbed the child and held her as a hostage.

Police said the department's special operations team was called and about 3 a.m., an officer shot and killed the man when he walked out onto the home's balcony. Police said the man used the 2-year-old as a shield and had a gun held to her head.

The man also aimed the gun at officers, according to police. That's when the officer took one shot and killed the suspect.

Police spokesman, Officer Leland Ashley said they didn't want the incident to end like this.

"He knew we were out here. He knew police were here. Why he didn't come out, we'll never know," said Leland Ashley.

Police say the child was not injured and is OK. She is back with her mother. Police said she is the woman's daughter, but the suspect is not her father.

The officer who fired the fatal shot is on paid leave pending an investigation.

The name of the man has not been released.
