A Bartlesville man is dead after a police officer shot him several times during a domestic call.

Bartlesville Police said the man shot actually punched one of the officers responding to the call, and that's when the officer fired his gun.

Police officers said they were called to a home near Edgewood Avenue and Phillips Boulevard around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, but by the time they arrived the man was already gone.

They said the man came back, hours later, around 5:00 p.m., and neighbors called police.

Officers said as soon as they arrived, the woman tried to run out of the house to safety but the man ran after her, tackling her to the ground.

At that point, officers deployed a Taser, which they said had no effect.

That's when they said the man punched one of the officers, who then took out his gun and shot the man.

Neighbors said they heard four or five gunshots.

The man died at the hospital.

Captain Jay Hastings with Bartlesville police said, "It's just a domestic violence call, something routine officers do day in and day out. He can go pretty violent pretty quick. It's one of the more dangerous calls that officers have to deal with."

"I'm still shaking actually, literally still shaking,” neighbor Josh Carey said. “My mind is out there right now. I watch things on YouTube, and those videos, I've never witnessed anybody ever being shot at, or shot in general. This is probably one of the most intense things I've ever gone through."

Bartlesville police said the assaulted officer was treated and released from the hospital.

Neighbors said the woman was badly beaten and her face was bleeding. She also went to the hospital.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation.
