A fugitive who had been on the run for eight days has died after a shootout with officers in western Oklahoma, law enforcement officials confirm.

Michael Vance was killed Sunday night, officers said.

Authorities confirm that Dewey County Sheriff Clay Sander was shot in the arm by Vance, but his injury is said to be non-life-threatening.

Several law enforcement agencies were involved in the manhunt and had been in the area investigating a possible sighting earlier in the day near Hammon, which is about 11 miles west of Butler.

"The manhunt is over and all Ellis County deputies are fine. Unfortunately, one officer was shot and he is one of my best friends. So, I'm asking for prayers for him. Thank you," wrote Ellis County Sheriff Shane Booth on his Facebook page.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office, along with several other law enforcement entities assisted in the manhunt Sunday, police said.

Officers were first called Sunday to a wooded area near Hammon in western Oklahoma after a person said they found the silver Mitsubishi Eclipse thought to be stolen by Michael Vance. Hammon is in Custer and Roger Mills Counties.
