After much anticipation, the City of Tulsa - with help from the local community - will have a monarch butterfly waystation fully installed Friday.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett announced in September that the city would be opening the waystation near 85th and Lewis as part of a beautification and sidewalk project on Lewis Avenue between 81st and 91st streets.

The city completed the sidewalk installation in September

Oral Roberts University students, Riverfield Country Day School students and volunteers from Grogg's Green Barn will be on site Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help install the waystation.

Monarch waystations serve as stopping places for monarchs to receive necessary resources, such as milkweed and nectar, which help sustain their migration to and from Mexico each year, the City of Tulsa wrote in a news release.

“Our number one priority for the neighborhood was to install a much-needed sidewalk to make it safer for pedestrians,” Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett said. “Through our resiliency efforts, groups across generations came together to make this more than a sidewalk project by creating a unique monarch waystation that could also serve as the practical connector for residents in the area.”

Donations from several organizations funded the project.

University Village will maintain the waystation after the installation.
