Oklahomans have decided to restructure laws on alcoholic beverages by passing State Question 792.

Currently in Oklahoma, the only place you can buy cold beer is in grocery and convenience stores, and it's only 3.2% alcohol. Liquor stores can sell strong beer, but not cold. Liquor stores are also the only place you can buy wine.

Supporters said the passing of 792 will change the “Prohibition-era laws” and make them more modern.

"Today’s passage of SQ 792 is a huge step forward for Oklahomans who have been demanding common sense laws regarding access to beer," said Lisette Barnes, president of the Oklahoma Beer Alliance. "The Oklahoma Beer Alliance and its members believe SQ 792 will help grow the state’s beer industry and provide increased quality and convenience. We look forward to continuing to work with all stakeholders, member businesses and legislators on implementation of a modernization system that will benefit consumers, businesses, and the state economy."

They said it will provide Oklahomans with the same access to wine and beer as consumers in 45 other states,  allowing them to purchase wine and cold beer more conveniently throughout the state at all levels of retail.

Supporters also said the passage of 792 will boost the Oklahoma economy by allowing local businesses to operate under comparable legislation as their competitors in neighboring states. Local businesses, including small breweries and wine producers, will be able to grow within the state and possibly would create new local jobs.

Opponents said the additional competition from grocery stores and convenience stores will hurt independent liquor retailers who are mostly small business owners.

The measure will take effect October 1, 2018.
