Mayes County deputies are looking for a man who escaped while wearing handcuffs Wednesday morning.

The sheriff's office says deputies were called to a home near Locust Grove at 10:40 a.m. concerning a disturbance. They arrived and found Derek Hellard, 20, fighting with another person.

Deputies cuffed him and put him into a patrol car. They said Hellard then assaulted a deputy and ran away.

They say Derek Hellard is not considered armed or dangerous. He is six feet tall, weighs about 160 pounds and has red hair.

While deputies continue to look for Derek Hellard, the sheriff's office urges Locust Grove-area residents to remain vigilant. Deputies ask that you call 911 or the Mayes County Sheriff's Office or 918-825-3535 if you see him.
