Police Release 911 Tapes After OSU Student Was Found Dead

Stillwater police released the 911 call from a devastating discovery inside the Sigma Chi fraternity house at Oklahoma State University.

Fraternity brothers called a dispatcher about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

In the call, at least two Sigma Chi members can be heard describing what it was like to find an unresponsive 20-year-old Brandon Cavazos.

Dispatcher: Stillwater 911, can we help you?

Caller: When we went in there, he was cold, and he wasn't responsive. It seems like he's thrown up in his bed.

Dispatcher: Is he awake?

Caller: No, he's unresponsive.

Dispatcher: Is he breathing?

Caller: We can't tell.. He's trying to find a pulse.

The caller soon describes a police officer arriving to the house. The caller remains on the line.

The audio recording captured the officer asking when was the last time anyone had contact with Cavazos. The callers can be heard telling the officers that they witnessed him snoring in bed around 2 a.m. Saturday.

The fraternity did not release an official statement following the incident, and subsequent investigation.

A post to the Sigma Chi Facebook page states the fraternity is cooperating with police and the university.

The post also stated, "We are devastated at the loss of Brandon Cavazos."

Cavazos' friends from the school of journalism and broadcasting at OSU were also distraught.

"We just had to sit there and soak it in and everything just went slow, everything just turned gray," said Kevin Dorsey, an OSU junior.

Dorsey said he and Cavazos' best friend, Dekota Gregory, learned of the news during halftime of football game on Saturday.

The group of friends would regularly hang out after the games.

"I will miss all of those little moments," Gregory explained. "Those moments that hit me now will probably hit me for the rest of my life."

Gregory said they were former roommates and all of their friends had plans to live together their senior year.

They all described Cavazos as determined, friendly and joyful.

"He always found a way to put a smile on everyone's face and no one was down when they were around Brandon," said Dorsey.

The friends plan to travel to Texas for a funeral service on Friday.

Meanwhile, Stillwater police are investigating his death.

The state Medical Examiner is waiting on toxicology results to determine a cause of death.
