The Golden Hurricane look to bounce back from its loss to Navy against the University of Central Florida on Saturday. Philip Montgomery and select Golden Hurricane players addressed the media Tuesday to discuss the upcoming matchup.

Montgomery

on loss to Navy and Dane Evans becoming TU’s all-time leading passer:

“Obviously, disappointed in last week. With that being said, I am proud of our football team. I thought we went and battled for 60 minutes. I thought it was two really good football teams playing at a high level, and you know when you do that, that’s what college football is about. And I thought our guys battled for 60, gave us opportunities to win. There’s a lot of plays in that game that could’ve gone one way or another. But with that being said, I was proud of the way our guys really continued to battle throughout the game. You know, we played really hard. We didn’t play intelligent all the time. You know, there was some key things that we needed to do that we didn’t get done and some down in distance situations that we could’ve taken better opportunity of getting ourselves aligned a little bit better. But, those are things that are gonna happen within every game. You know, offensively, I thought all of those guys really stepped up and played well. Dane setting the record, that's a true honor. When you start talking about the names of the quarterbacks that have come through this program, I think Dane handles it the way you ought to handle it. He’s very humble about what he does. He’s a hardworking, competitive dude that continues to keep trying to find ways to get better. And so, proud of him for his accomplishment; he deserves it. He’s been through the ups and downs around here and continued to get better and stay positive and lead our football team. You know, I thought Keenen Johnson, you know, his first career touchdown was a big play at a crucial time. I thought Hobbs really stepped up and made some big plays as did all those receivers across the board. I thought we ran the football. We had some explosive plays in the running game. Weren’t as consistent as we’d been, you know, for the past month or so but still were able to find some lanes and to stay as balanced as we could against a really tough defense. And again, take my hat off to Ken and his staff and the Navy program. I thought they played one heck of a football game.”

on upcoming game vs. UCF:

“As far as leading into next week, you know Central Florida, as you put on the tape, you gotta remember this is a team that in a short time ago was playing in a Fiesta Bowl, was 11-2 or 11-3 I think that year. [They had] great recruiting classes to go along with those winning seasons, very athletic last year. Going through a lot of turmoil with coaching changes and those things taking place and it just kind of snowballed on them. But from an athletic standpoint, they got guys running around everywhere on the field. Defensively, as I look at it on tape, I think it’s probably gonna be one of the toughest defenses we’ve faced all year. They’re playing with a lot of confidence right now and playing at a high level. I think offensively they’re getting better and better every week. You know, anytime you’re going and installing a new scheme and a new system like Coach Frost is doing, it does take time. And you can see each and every week they’re getting better and better and better. Playing a freshman quarterback with Milton, you can see him getting more confident as the year goes on. So, we’ve got our hands full, gotta get back on a plane. We gotta try to get back as healthy as we can and get prepared for a really tough football game in Orlando.”

on controversial 4th down call:

“After seeing the replay of it all, you know, the thing that is really disheartening about the whole situation is this is not the first time this year this has happened to us. I am disappointed from that standpoint. I’m upset for our players because it’s very difficult to go on the road and win a football game. It’s even more difficult when you got guys that have busted their tail all year long throughout the spring and summer and fall camp, even throughout this season. For them to not have the opportunity to decide the outcome of a 60-minute game, that’s wrong. So, in my opinion, that should not happen. The players should decide it and not anybody else. I think as you look at the replay, I think it’s really clear what’s going on and what has happened and I feel like we got the football. Whether we go score and win the game right there, who knows, but it should be decided by those guys on the field. I mean, we’re sitting there, you see Jesse rip the ball out. We’ve got the football in our hands before anything else has happened. Even tack on a penalty, tack on a penalty but give us an opportunity for the players on the field to decide the outcome of a game and not anybody else.”

Wide Receiver Keevan Lucas

on season goals:

“I haven’t won ten wins since I was in high school, so that’s a thing. That’s a goal, a new goal that we can set to achieve. And we still can go win ten wins, you know, and still can go down in and be a team in Tulsa history that hasn’t won ten wins in while. You know, so going from 2-10 just two seasons ago and now we have the opportunity to win ten games, I mean, I think that’s a blessing within itself. So, I mean, we just gotta focus on that, focus on what we can control.”
