A Tulsa man is worried for his family's safety after he confronts a would-be burglar in the middle of the night - capturing the person on camera.

Talk about a terrifying tale.

At home with your family settling in for the night - when you discover someone trying to break in.

"He starts rattling my door handle," said homeowner DeWayne Walters.

While sitting at his computer, Walters came within inches of a would-be burglar Wednesday night.

"Yeah, startled me a bit," he said.

Walters' security cameras capturing what he can't see.  A man strolls up to his apartment - appearing to have a knife in hand.

"That's when I got up... and I asked him again to identify himself," Walters said.

But Walters could not understand him.

"He muddled something unintelligible," Walters said.

Fearing for his family's safety, Walters asked his wife to head to the back room.

"I said, 'take my son to the back room, and ya'll lock yourself in," and I basically put my weight up against the door..." Walters said.

As Walters was on the inside of the door, holding it shut, saying he could hear the man beating and kicking against the door.  On the outside, you can see some of the damage that Walters said was left by the suspect.

But just as soon as it started, it ended.

"And I yell out, 'I'm calling the police' and that's when he left," Walters said.

In the video, you can see the man casually walking out, down the street, as Walters calls police.

"A million thoughts were going through my head," he said.

Walters said police arrived 30 minutes later, and they returned the next day to ask him to ID a possible suspect.

"They pointed to him, and I gave them the thumbs up, and said 'yeah, it was him," Walters said.

But he said it didn't end the way he expected.

"And then I happen to look over, maybe 5 or 10 minutes later, and I see the guy unhandcuffed," Walters said.

For now, Walters feels lucky no one was hurt.

"I'm glad I didn't open that door because he probably would have stuck me or something as soon as I opened the door," Walters said.

Because it's an ongoing investigation, TPD could only tell me they did receive a call about a burglary at Walter's apartment, but had no information to give out.
