The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is looking into a homicide and arson case, after a man’s badly-burned body was found inside a home that was reportedly set on fire in Sayre, Oklahoma.

The Sayre Police Department requested OSBI investigative assistance with the case overnight. According to the OSBI, firefighters responded to a house fire early Tuesday morning in the 200 block of S. Broadway in Sayre. Police received a tip a homicide victim was inside.

When emergency crews arrived, they found a badly-burned body inside the house. The victim’s wife confirmed to special agents she witnessed Jerry Essary’s murder. She was able to run away from the scene before the suspect set the house on fire.

The woman said she hid in the neighborhood until law enforcement responded to the scene.

According to the OSBI, the suspect was found unresponsive in his pickup truck approximately 100 yards from the home where the homicide and arson took place. He was transported to an Elk City hospital.

The woman who witnessed her husband’s murder was also transported to an area hospital for injuries to her face inflicted by the suspect.

Once the suspect is arrested, OSBI will release his name.
