Bedlam: Sooners Win Second-Straight Big 12 Title With 38-20 Win Over OSU

Baker Mayfield threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns as Oklahoma beat rival Oklahoma State 38-20 in Bedlam. With the win, the Sooners picked up their second straight Big 12 Championship and are now 86-18-7 all-time against the Cowboys.

The Sooners have now won 16-straight conference games and head coach Bob Stoops now has more Big 12 Titles (10) than he has home losses (nine).

After a competitive first half where the teams were deadlocked at 17-17 halfway through, OU outscored OSU 21-to-3 after intermission and put the game away after Joe Mixon rumbled for a 79-yard touchdown run one play after OSU’s Ben Grogan missed a 38-yard field goal that would’ve cut the Sooners lead to eight points.

It was a monster run by Mixon, but it was the Sooners’ second long touchdown of the game.

Trailing 3-0 early in the second quarter, Mayfield scrambled right out of the pocket and connected with Dede Westbrook downfield, who immediately juked to throw off an OSU defensive back and zipped 69 yards to the end zone to give OU an early lead.

Westbrook’s touchdown gave the entire Sooners’ team life, but his second quarter injury nearly deflated any momentum they had built up. Westbrook ran a route across the middle but OSU safety Jordan Sterns blew up Westbrook with a controversial hit that knocked OU’s star wide receiver out of the game.

The Cowboys trailed 10-3 at the time of Westbrook’s injury, but OSU took full advantage of the momentum swing. A Mason Rudolph to James Washington 44-yard connection set up a tenacious Chris Carson touchdown run, then Rudolph ran a score in himself to give the Pokes a 17-10 lead.

Without their best playmaking receiver, things appeared a bit gloomy for the Sooners, but Mayfield constructed a five-play, 76-yard drive that tied the game on a touchdown pass to Geno Lewis with a minute before half.

Perine rumbled in for a one-yard touchdown on OU’s first possession after intermission, then after OSU’s offense went three-and-out, the Sooners put together a 13-play drive that ended with a slick 12-yard touchdown pass and catch from Mayfield to Mixon.

Just like that the Sooners were up two scores and OSU had to dig out of a hole on the road.

Grogan booted a 30-yard field goal to bring the Cowboys within 11 points, but his fourth quarter miss was costly as Mixon ripped off a career-long run for a score on the next play that basically iced the game.

OU outgained the OSU 629-to-403 in the win and led the time of possession 35:07-to-24:53.

Perine rushed for a whopping 239 yards on 37 carries to lead the Sooners while Mixon added 99 rushing yards of his own. Westbrook totaled four catches for 111 yards and score before leaving the game, and Lewis filled in nicely in his absence with three catches for 28 yards and a touchdown.

Rudolph struggled throughout most of the game and failed to complete 50-percent of his passes for the first time in his career after going 11-for-25 for 186 yards on Saturday. Both Justice Hill and Carson had tremendous games on the ground, rushing for 99 and 91 yards respectively.
