The main focus continues to be the strong arctic front that’s expected to plow across the state Saturday bringing the coldest air we’ve experienced in a few years. There will be a slight chance of some precipitation with this system but the main impact will be the cold air and very low wind chill values Saturday night into Sunday morning to midday.

Before we arrive into the weekend, we’ll track a low potential for a few sprinkles today across part of northern and eastern Ok with a weak system moving across the central plains.   A reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive today and will drop the temps a few more degrees later tonight into Thursday with morning lows in the 20s and highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

We’ll see mostly cloudy sky today until this afternoon when some sun will make a late day appearance.  A weak system brushing the plains this morning may produce a few pockets of drizzle or a sprinkle or two.  The temps would be near or below freezing during this period.   Just FYI, not a huge deal but there is a very low end chance.

This morning’s data continue to support a rapid expansion of warm-moist air streaming back across the southern and central plains late Thursday night into Friday morning as our next storm system begins impacting the inter mountain region.   A surface area of low pressure will develop across either southeastern Colorado or southwestern Kansas Friday and the rapidly falling pressures will create strong south winds from 20 to 40 mph by midday to afternoon Friday.

While model data is not overall bullish on precipitation Friday, this pattern will support some drizzle developing late Thursday night into Friday morning as the moisture returns.   We anticipate readings to be near or slightly above freezing for most locations before this precip starts to develop, but a few spots cross far northern OK or southern Kansas could possibly have an hour or so with some freezing drizzle.   I don’t think this will be an issue but the chance is not zero even though it’s very low.

Saturday morning, most data support the front plowing southeast into the state.  Enough moisture and instability will remain for a few storms across southeastern OK late Friday night into Saturday with some light showers or drizzle a possibility Saturday midday across northeastern OK.   As the cold-shallow air moves southward, any leftover moisture will quickly transition to to some light snow showers.   We do not anticipate any significant accumulation of wintry precip but a dusting up to one inch may be possible across northern OK and then across far east central OK and northwestern Arkansas by evening.

The best chance for some accumulating snowfall will be across northwestern OK where some 2 inches will be possible.   The bigger deal will be the colder air arriving Saturday night and sticking around through Sunday and Monday.

Most data support temps dropping into the single digits or lower teens Sunday morning with some wind chill values closer from zero to -8 late Saturday into Sunday morning.   Highs Sunday may stay in the upper 20s with north winds and mostly sunny sky.   The cold air will remain Monday with lows in the 10s and highs in the mind to upper 30s.
