Handcuffed Man Hides In Tulsa Neighborhood Overnight

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tulsa Police captured a suspect who had escaped while being arrested Sunday morning, April 16. Police said several citizens helped them in the search for Michael Payne who had four outstanding felony warrants for his arrest.

TPD started getting calls around 7:30 a.m. that a man with his hands cuffed behind his back was running through a neighborhood around 51st and Lewis. They learned he escaped from the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office around midnight.

"Officers made contact with citizens and knew that Payne was in the area and eventually spoke with two concerned citizens that indicated that the suspect had asked for them to call his mother," records show.

Payne was eventually found hiding in the back yard of a house in the 5200 block of South Atlanta. He tried to run again, managing to hop a fence and hide behind some bushes in another yard.

Police said they fired pepperball rounds into the shrubs which "had the desired effect." Payne was taken into custody.

Police said Payne complained of a head injury and sore ribs from jumping fences. The 31-year-old man was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
