BA Student In Jail For Bringing Loaded Gun To Freshman Academy

Posted: Updated:

Broken Arrow Police say a student at the Freshman Academy brought a gun to school Wednesday.

It was near the end of the school day that police and district leaders said a student alerted staff that another freshman brought a loaded gun.

A district spokesperson said staff immediately called the police.

When officers arrived, they found the student with a gun inside their backpack and confirmed it was loaded.

Police said the student was showing the gun to other students when one alerted staff.

BAPD took the gun as part of their investigation.

Officers took the student to the police station for questioning and later arrested the teen.

The district sent out an automated message to parents and gave us a similar statement saying:

“This afternoon, it was reported that a Broken Arrow Freshman Academy student had a gun in their possession on school grounds. Police were immediately dispatched to the school, and the gun has been confiscated and turned over to the Broken Arrow Police Department. No threats against students or staff have been made, and the student, student’s family, and district are working closely with BAPD while the matter is investigated fully. Student safety is our number one concern, and we are grateful to Broken Arrow Police Department for their quick response. Dismissal of the day will proceed as normal. If you have any concerns, please contact your child’s school site. Thank you.”

Police said they are thankful a student knew to do the right thing.

Officer James Koch said, "It is very, very, important to go to the administration, to go alert someone - tell a teacher, tell a staff member, call the police - it's very important to do that as soon as possible."

Police are still interviewing the student.

The district said dismissal of the school day went as normal.

The student has been booked into the Broken Arrow jail for bringing a firearm to school.
