A group of gunslingers is taking a step back to the 1800s; they’re celebrating early Oklahoma settlers with a Fast Draw Championship.

"I've liked the cowboy stuff all my life. I enjoy shooting guns, it just went together. I found it, got into it, fell in love with it the first weekend I tried it," said gunslinger champion, Whiplash.

Whiplash is the sixth best gunslinger in the world. He's out in Kellyville and is competing in the Oklahoma State Cowboy Fast Draw Shootout Championship.

"It's a family. You go here, you see these people here, and it may be a few - four or five months - before you go to another one and you see them again, and it’s just like you saw them yesterday," he said.

That's just how event coordinator, "Blackfox Lil" organized the event.

"The motto for Cowboy Fast Draw is safety first, fun second, competition third, and it's just a fun thing to do, sport to do," she said.

More than 90 shooters from nine states are competing this weekend.

Dressed in western get-ups, they aren't just using any old gun to shoot - each competitor has to use a single action gun and holster, similar to those used in the late 1800s.

"The sport is one of the fastest, if not the fastest growing shooting sport in the country," Blackfox Lil said.

A lot of people might be able to hit the targets if they had time to aim, but to place there, you have to be quick and accurate.

Competitors like Whiplash said they hope to be a part of the competition for years to come.

“I know people who are in their mid to late 70s who are still shooting, so that gives me 25 more years," he said.

If you want to see the gunslingers in action, the event goes through the weekend. You can find more information here.
