Annual Patriot Cup Tournament Benefits 'Folds Of Honor'

OWASSO, Oklahoma -

Professional golfers, athletes and celebrities grabbed their golf bags and hit the course this Memorial Day, to support the Folds of Honor.

The fundraiser is expected to raise millions for the cause.

Folds of Honor has been around for 10 years - and in those 10 years, it’s given out 13,000 scholarships to the spouses and children of our American heroes.

Major Dan Rooney, a PGA golfer and a fighter pilot with the Air Force Reserve, was inspired to marry his two passions a decade ago when he experienced first-hand the heartbreak of a child who lost his military father.

"That night, I watched Brock's 4-year-old son watch his father's American flag draped coffin inched down the cargo ramp. And I had a calling in my life," he said.

Thus, Folds of Honor was born.

For the last eight years, golfers have poured in for the Patriot Cup - one of the organization's biggest fundraisers.

Professional golfers, celebrities and pro athletes all give up their holidays to support men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day.

"Coming together on a day that would typically be off, right? They'd be with their families at the lake celebrating like we do on Memorial Day, but they understand that's not what Memorial Day is about," Rooney said.

Professional golfer Tom Pernice took a break from the PGA tour to be there, as he has for the last eight years.

"Wouldn't miss it for the world. To be able to give back for the people and the families that have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms that we have in this country. It's the least that I can do," he said. "Freedom isn't free, so we should be thankful for the people that give their life and sacrifices for what we have."

Rooney said they expect to give away between $13 and $15 million worth of scholarships this year.
