Injured Goose, Duck Recovering After Being Shot With Darts

TULSA, Oklahoma -

A Midtown neighborhood worked together to help two animals hit with darts after neighbors found a duck and a goose with the injuries at Swan Lake.

This goose is back at home after quite an eventful, and painful weekend.

"It's just a great feeling. The animal is healthy and happy," said Tulsa resident Jarrett Keck.

Keck helped rescue the animal after neighbors say someone attacked the goose with a dart.

"Whoever did it might not realize the seriousness of the matter," said Tulsa Resident Nancy Lile.

With help from neighbors at Swan Lake, the goose made a trip to the vet and returned hours later to its midtown pond.

But, the attempt to rescue a duck with a similar injury wasn't so simple.

One man in his kayak tried bringing it to safety on Saturday but the bird proved to be self-sufficient so everyone let it be.

Neighbors planned to come back out the lake in full force, this time, with three or four kayaks but decided not to, after someone spotted the duck and the dart was gone.

"We're hoping it makes a complete recovery," Lile said.

Somehow, it came out of the duck's left eye," neighbors said.

"The fact that it worked it's way out - it's just tremendous news," Keck said.

Lile said the duck seems to be doing okay right now but she said she'll be keeping a closer watch on the birds with hopes whoever hurt them doesn't strike again.

"They might think 'oh it's only a duck,'" Liles said.

But to her, it's more and she wonders what could happen next.

"Would they try it on something else? Or a human?" Liles said.

But instead of being fearful, she and her neighbors are focusing on what they can accomplish when they work together.

"We're stewards of the land."
