A Shawnee nutrition club owner, who once overcame the obstacles of homelessness, is leading the charge to raise money for others in need. For the start of the school year, she and her partners are hosting a teacher gift card giveaway.

The nutrition enthusiasts say they are all about making a positive impact in the Pottawatomie County community, and with the teacher pay debate, giving back to educators does just that.

Pure Nutrition Shawnee and partner locations Xtra Nutrition and T Town Nutrition in Tecumseh aim to shift locals towards a healthy lifestyle.

“Their desire to help people is really awesome,” says longtime customer Brandi Ockert.

Beyond selling shakes and teas, the local club owners are always looking to help those in need. For Pure Nutrition owner Alina Groth, that is because people in the Shawnee community helped her when she was homeless in high school.

She says, “It was a rough part in my life, but definitely thankful because I think it gave me a whole new perspective and understanding.”

This year, after seeing her mother-in-law and other underpaid teachers paying for school supplies with money out of their own pockets, Groth knew what their next project should be, benefiting those selfless educators.

Customer and former first and second grade teacher Betty Bohuslavicky says she regularly spent half of her paycheck on extra supplies for the classroom.

“You don’t really think about how it’s affecting you and what you go home with at the end of the day and what you don’t go home with at the end of the day because you want what’s best for the kids,” she says.

Through Thursday, the clubs are collecting donations for a gift card giveaway for deserving teachers in Pott County. Each dollar donated earns you an entry to win a month of free breakfast.

Nominate someone through Pure Nutrition's Facebook page by sharing their post about the campaign with the name of your teacher and why they deserve to win.

The clubs will draw winners' names Friday, and they hope to inspire others to share the love.

Groth says, “We have people that work here who are teachers too, so it’s sad but it’s got to start somewhere.”
