Tulsa Public Schools started classes today, but the district is still hiring teachers.

At Marshall Elementary, the teacher shortage meant substitutes would have to fill in, but instead central office staff worked in classrooms, including Superintendent Deborah Gist.

"As long as I taught and as much as I know just how incredibly hard our teachers work, and how challenging it is, it was such a great reminder. I have mad respect for the people who do it everyday," Gist said.

Gist will be back in class tomorrow.

The teacher who will eventually take over the class is still in the hiring process.
