Sooners Named FWAA's National Team Of The Week

Oklahoma's 31-16 win at No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday catapulted the Sooners into the No. 2 spot in the AP Top 25 Poll, and on Monday resulted in a national honor. OU has been named the Football Writers Association of America National Team of the Week for games of the weekend of Sept. 9.

After trailing 13-10 in the latter stages of the third quarter, the Sooners scored 21 straight points to take command in the battle of college football giants. OU outgained Ohio State 490 to 350 yards on the night and handed the Buckeyes their largest margin of defeat at home since 1999. It was also just OSU's third home loss in the six-year Urban Meyer era.

Oklahoma's 490 yards were the most surrendered by Ohio State in 34 games and the most in Columbus in five years. The Sooners' 386 passing yards, all from Baker Mayfield, were the most by an OSU opponent inside Ohio Stadium since 1985.

Mayfield completed 27 of his 36 pass attempts, three of them for touchdowns, without throwing an interception. The Sooners reached Ohio State territory on nine of the 10 possessions that began on OU's side of the field.

On the other side of the ball, OU never allowed the Buckeyes to get into a sustained flow. The Sooners held dual-threat quarterback J.T. Barrett to a 54.3-percent completion rate and to 249 yards of total offense. Twenty-three of OSU's 69 plays (33 percent) went for zero or negative yards, or resulted in an interception. Parnell Motley's fourth-quarter pick came one play after OU went ahead 24-13, and the Sooners scored another touchdown four plays later to take a 31-13 lead.

The last time OU gave up fewer than 13 points to a top-five AP opponent was in 2004 when it blanked No. 5 Texas 12-0.

The Sooners return home to host Tulane on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT.

Founded in 1941, the FWAA consists of 1,400 men and women who cover college football. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game-day operations, major awards and its annual All-America team.

The FWAA has named a national team of the week since the 2002 season. Members of the 12-person FWAA All-America Committee — plus one fan vote from Twitter — decide the weekly honor.
