Terence Crutcher is being remembered one year after former Tulsa police officer Betty Shelby shot and killed him.

A jury acquitted Shelby back in May.

To recognize the anniversary of his death the family organized the first Terence Crutcher "pain to purpose" gala.

The gala raises money for scholarships to be given away under the Terence Crutcher foundation.

Crutcher had just left Tulsa community college the night he died.

So his family hopes the scholarships help someone else continue their education in his name.

Dr. Tiffany Crutcher, Terence’s sister, said, “After that painful verdict we had to pick ourselves up and say look we're going to have to turn this negative into a positive."

You can find out more about the Terence Crutcher foundation here.
