SKIATOOK, Oklahoma - The Skiatook Bulldogs have their eyes on getting back to the state championship game and a new team motto is helping them get there.

The Skiatook Bulldogs have been to the top. A 2014 State Title berth, but since then have fallen off.

Down to a 5-5 record and missing the playoffs a year ago.

"We didn't want to go back to last year, we didn't want to have 5-5, wanted to go all out, wanted to get district champs," Justin Demauro said.

So far, they're off to a good start, 2-1 with wins over Glenpool and East Central, and Head Coach Vance Miller credits a change between the ears.

"We've been preaching mental toughness with our kids, and just if we can be mentally tough, then we feel like we can be successful," Miller said.

One of the ways the Bulldogs remind themselves about that mental toughness is their team motto: TPW, for Tough People Win. It's something Miller instituted this offseason and it's already paying dividends.

"We got a good senior class, and they've kind of taken some ownership of that, as far as the mental toughness part of things, really preached that, and each week we're seeing it get better and better," Miller said.

The Bulldogs are taking that attitude and applying it to everything from practice to games.

"Only the strong people survive. Everybody can go home at 2:50 and chill and lay in bed, but not a lot of people can come out here and run gassers and do all this," said TK Wilkerson. "We just keep saying one more, one more, one more."
