ACLU Responds To Panhandling Ordinance Change

The ACLU of Oklahoma is not backing down from what they are calling Oklahoma City's anti-panhandling ordinance, despite some recent changes.

Through the original ordinance last year, the City Council limited panhandling based on the size of the median

The new amendment permits someone to stay on median if the speed limit is less than 40 mph. 

Legal Director for the ACLU of Oklahoma, Brady Henderson, issued this statement on the subject, saying the amendment doesn't change the unconstitutionality of the ordinance.

Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Muscular Dystrophy Association thinks the amendment will help their Fill the Boot fundraising efforts. 

Fill the Boot's fundraising total has dwindled in half over the last two years because firefighters couldn't use medians to ask for donations.

The amendment opens up more than 100 intersections where firefighters can ask for donations.

The new amended ordinance goes into effect Dec 7.
