A metro caterer was targeted early Tuesday morning during a brazen break-in. Someone stole a cash register and safe from King's Catering and Cuisine on S. May Avenue.

The owners, Kaylee Owen and Dwayne Johnson, were woken up to alerts that the thief had broken in, and now they are left wondering why someone would want to steal from a small business around the holidays.

Johnson raced to work to find a large rock thrown through the front window and the back door left wide open.

Surveillance video from behind the counter shows the thief snatching the cash register from its attachments and heading to the back. Unfortunately for him, the register was nearly empty.

“The actual register is what cost the money, not the cash that was in it,” said Owen.

Owen said the young man in the video then got help stealing a Sentry safe from their back office. It too, did not contain much because it was just moved in last week when the couple reopened their restaurant after months of focusing on catering.

“I think that a lot of it has drawn attention,” Owen said of the opening, “but I think that the holidays is a big deal.”

She said she has also had a laptop stolen recently, and her brother-in-law’s car was stolen from his driveway last week.

They are hoping the community can help police catch the crook, after sharing the suspect's images on social media and offering a $500 reward for information. They hope by doing so, they can help prevent future attacks on their neighbors.

“The stereotype is people that own businesses are rich,” said Owen. “Well, that’s not the case. If anything, we have way more bills than the average person, and we’re just really trying to build a life for our future and our family.”

Meantime, the couple plans to keep cooking, and they want the thief to enjoy the Christmas season while he still can.

“We give away meals all the time and we believe in giving back,” said Owen. “That’s the main thing. If you needed it, we probably would have given it to you. Just don’t take it.”

If you have any information that could lead to an arrest, report it to Oklahoma City Police in order to claim the $500 reward.
