Facebook Scammers Blamed For Threat Against Miami Schools

Posted: Updated:
MIAMI, Oklahoma -

Miami Police say they have received several calls concerning alleged threats to Miami Public Schools.

"Our officers are aware of the threats and working to find out who is behind these threats," the department Facebook page reads.

They later posted that someone had fallen victim to scammers and given their account information to someone claiming to provide technical support. The scammer posted the threat to that person's Facebook page, according to police.

Police say the person was also scammed to send money overseas to someone after meeting them on a dating site.

"Detectives attempted to assist the citizen in deleting his Facebook account, but all of his passwords had been changed," Miami Police said. "The citizen was advised to contact Facebook and advised them of his account being compromised."

School Superintendent Jerry Hogan said it was a blessing that the school was on spring break when the threat was published.

"In today's climate you have to take these things very seriously," Hogan said. He said the school system has a very good relationship with the police department, and he had confidence in their investigation.

The social media page did not belong to a student, he said.
