One Week Away From Possible Oklahoma Teacher Walkout

Posted: Updated:

We are now just one week away from a possible statewide teacher walkout, if Oklahoma lawmakers can't come up with a plan to give teachers raises.

If lawmakers don't reach a deal by April 1st, which is Sunday, teachers across the state will be walking out of school Monday morning.

The Oklahoma Education Association released a new proposal, that includes more than $905 million for teacher raises.

It includes an increase in the gasoline and tobacco taxes, an alcohol tax, changes in income tax deductions and an increase in the tax on oil and natural gas production from 2 percent to 5 percent.

Lawmakers were expected to only work a half week this week because of the Easter holiday, giving them three working days to get a plan; however, they said Monday that they are planning to work the entire week and possibly through the weekend on a plan for funding raises for teachers, support staff and state employees.
