Feeding Tulsa Children During The Teacher Walkout

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

Even though schools are shut down again on Tuesday for the teacher walkout, Tulsa Public School volunteers are on the job preparing meals.

The goal is to make sure students get meals while classes are out.

At Tulsa's East Central High School, TPS volunteers packaged food for Tulsa students.

I spoke with a volunteer who says they spent last week and Monday preparing breakfast and lunch for 70 off-site locations where kids can go to get a meal while school is closed during the walkout.

There are 32,000 Tulsa Public School students who get free or reduced meals at school on a daily basis.

This week, those meals are being served at community sites across Tulsa for any child, 18 years of age and younger.  This program includes all children in the Tulsa area, not just TPS students.

The volunteers say the food program is funded by the federal government.

Depending upon which site, breakfast Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. or 8 a.m.
