Cold Start To A Pleasant Wednesday Across Green Country

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

The dynamic storm system that blew across the state yesterday has brought us back down into the cellar this morning with freeze warnings underway for a large portion of the state.  A surface ridge of high pressure near the area this morning will bring lighter wind and dry air into northeast Oklahoma.  The result will be temps dropping to near the dew point with most locations across northeast Oklahoma and southeast Kansas into the upper 20s to lower 30s with some outliers even colder.   The metro will end up around 28 to 34 depending upon your exact spot and locations along or north of the I-40 region will bottom out around 32.   Areas south of the I-40 corridor may stay above freezing.  Temps that do drop into the freezing zone will rise above freezing around 9 to 10 am with sunshine and light wind prevailing for the afternoon with daytime highs reaching the mid-50s.   A fast yet small disturbance may slide across the state from the west to east Thursday with a few showers and afternoon highs reaching the mid-60s before another cold front back-doors the area with colder weather Friday into Saturday morning.

Weather Alerts

Once again it appears the next surface low will take a southern route as a surface low pressure area scoots across the Lone Star state Friday.   Most of the thunderstorm activity will be located near or south of the Red River into north or central Texas but overrunning precip will reach northern and eastern Oklahoma Friday by midday to afternoon.   There will remain a slight chance for some wintry precip late Friday night into Saturday morning across northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas as the cold air deepens for a few hours as the surface low ejects out of Texas.  The indication is that most of the moisture will be ending rather quickly but there remains enough precip in the data to keep a mention of some wintry mix, including sleet and snow for pre-dawn as the back side quickly ejects east.  The data has trended faster with the exit this morning but I’ll need to keep this very low mention for a few more runs.

WARN Interactive Radar

After another cold start Saturday morning with many spots in the upper 20s or lower 30s, daytime highs will move in to the mid-40s.   A fast-moving system will develop Sunday with south winds and temps moving into the 60s before another front moves across southeastern and eastern Oklahoma Sunday afternoon and evening with a slight chance for a few showers or storms.  Temps Monday will be rather mild compared to the past week with lows in the 40s and highs in the mid-60s.  Windy and warmer weather is expected next week with another strong to dynamic storm system nearing the state by Thursday or Friday.   Eventually the severe weather threats will be increasing across eastern Oklahoma as the time duration between cold air intrusions becomes further apart and moisture return has a chance to be more robust.  This may finally occur later next week.
