New Partnership Lets Broken Arrow Students Earn College Degree In High School

Posted: Updated:
BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -

A new partnership is set to give some Green Country students the chance to earn college credit while still in high school.

The dual credit program will allow Broken Arrow students to finish their senior year with an associate’s degree from TCC and then be able to seamlessly transfer to NSU to complete a bachelor’s degree just two years later.

“It’s truly an evolution and extension of this community’s commitment to higher learning,” said NSU President Dr. Steve Turner.

Broken Arrow Superintendent Dr. Janet Dunlop says, “we are going to try and identify at least 10 students that want to be education majors, so these electives that they normally take in high school can be a teacher education course at NSU.  We’re building our own teachers in Broken Arrow.”

But whatever their major, education leaders say the first-of-its-kind program will give students an inexpensive path to a college degree.

“By the time this student finishes their bachelor’s from Northeastern State, they will probably have had the opportunity to have the lowest cost bachelor’s degree in the state,” stated TCC President Dr. Leigh Goodson.

Dunlop believes the partnership is something that will benefit the entire community.

“Employers in this area are excited because this provides them with a qualified, highly-educated work force to walk straight from our school buildings into highly lucrative careers,” said Dunlop.

The first students would begin taking college courses this summer.
