Streaming entertainment is bigger than ever, and with so many streaming services adding new shows and movies every week, it can be nearly impossible to sort through the good and the bad. If you need something to watch and don’t want to wade through the digital muck that washes up on the internet’s shores, follow our picks below for the best new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and other services.

On the list this week: The second season of American Crime Story, Terry Gilliam’s sci-fi magnum opus (one of them, anyway), and more.

‘American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace’

best new shows and movies to stream assassination of gianni versace

Despite the tragic story it tells, the second season of American Crime Story begins bathed in light, the palatial estate of fashion designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) radiating gold. This is a story about glamour, and how envy can drive men to do terrible things. The Assassination of Gianni Versace tells the tale of the murder of the legendary fashion designer at the hands of Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss), a grifter who killed four other men and eventually himself. The show gets to the murder itself almost right off the bat, and then proceeds to explore the relationship between the men that led, over the years, to Versace’s death. The characters take precedence over the crime, and great performances from Ramirez and Criss (as well as Penelope Cruz as Versace’s sister, Donatella) help sell the emotional aspects of the story.

‘Kusama: Infinity’

Whatever meaning you discern (or don’t) in the works of Yayoi Kusama, it’s hard not to feel some sort of reaction to them. Kusama’s art is often colorful and expansive, her canvas sometimes stretching out over entire rooms. Heather Lenz’s documentary Kusama: Infinity examines the artist’s life, from her youth in a conservative, emotionally abusive household in Japan to her quest to make a name for herself in the New York art scene to her recent work. For those who have never stumbled across Kusama’s work — or those who already have an appreciation for it — this documentary is a fascinating look at an idiosyncratic artist.

best new shows and movies to stream brexit

Britain’s ongoing exit from the European Union has dominated the country’s political discourse for the last few years, but while so much of the attention has been focused on politicians like Prime Minister Theresa May or Boris Johnson, one of the most important figures — according to HBO’s Brexit, anyway — has remained in the background. Brexit is the story of the Leave campaign, told from the perspective of its campaign director, Dominic Cummings (Benedict Cumberbatch). The film delves into the machinations of Cummins and his team as they organize the effort to leave the EU, but Brexit avoids taking an explicit policy stance, instead focusing on the people involved and their motivations.

Terry Gilliam’s 1985 masterpiece Brazil is a bizarre, incisive portrayal of a world where bureaucracy and consumerism have enveloped every aspect of life. Set in a not-too-distant future, the film follows Sam (Jonathan Pryce), a minor government bureaucrat who has dreams of a specific, beautiful woman. After an unfortunate typo leads the government to arrest and accidentally kill Archibald Buttle, rather than alleged terrorist Archibald Tuttle (Robert De Niro), it falls to Sam to inform Buttle’s wife. Along the way, he meets Jill (Kim Greist), who looks exactly like the woman in his dreams, and Tuttle himself. Soon, Sam is in trouble with the government, which is hardly the best place to be.

The Grand Tour, Amazon’s spiritual successor to car/adventure show Top Gear, is back for its third season, with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May traveling the world once again, spreading good cheer and automotive high jinks everywhere they go. Pointed insults, explosions, and gorgeous cars are the show’s bread and butter, and there appear to be plenty more in season 3, which finds the hosts visiting, among other places, Detroit, former capital of the car industry. After years working together, Hammond, May, and Clarkson have effortless chemistry, ribbing each other as only old friends can.
