6A Golf Title Stays With Edmond North

BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -

In high school golf, Guthrie took the 5A boys crown, Heritage Hall are the champs in 4A, where Cascia Hall's Matt Braley fired a final round 65 for the individual title.

Oklahoma Christian is the 3A champion. Regent Prep won its first 2A state title by 41 shots.

But in 6A, it was the same song, different verse - Owasso and Edmond North were in a virtual tie, the Rams just six shots out of the lead going into the final 18, but, thanks to the low round of the tournament, the trophy once again stayed with the Huskies.

After near-perfect conditions for rounds one and two, the wind picked up significantly in the final round, turning an already tough course even tougher.

"It was a lot more windy today, and it was tough. It was a grind from the get-go," said Owasso’s Austin Enzbrenner said.

Edmond North’s Brock Polhill ran away and hid early – five under after the first seven, on his way to individual state championship honors with a 67.

"When I made that putt on seven, I was like, ‘I could go deep today,’ and I struggled through the next couple holes but I got it back together," he said.

Edmond North Head Coach Brock VanCleave said, "Just a bunch of kids that love golf and get out there and work, and I think guys before have set the example, and these guys have done a great job of following the lead."

For Owasso, it’s another state runner-up, the fifth straight year they’ve finished in the top three.

Enzbrenner was the individual runner-up.

"After we realized we were out of it, coach just wanted me to focus on myself on the last hole, but it definitely hurts. Bittersweet," he said.

"I thought our boys from one to five played really well. Didn't have anybody shoot over 80. We didn't have any eighties, and I would have taken that if you'd have said that at the first of the week," Owasso Head Coach Corey Burd said.
