OKC Teen Arrested After Accidental Shooting

A metro teen was arrested on Sunday after accidentally shooting his friend in the chest.

When officers first arrived to the Northwest Oklahoma City home, they were told the injured 17-year-old in the street was a victim of a drive-by shooting.

“They found a 17-year-old that had been shot through the chest,” said MSgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department.

The victim was conscious and told officers, "I was sleeping, then I got shot."

The teen was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

The victim's friend, Aaron Gunn, 16, and a witness told officers they were smoking on the front porch when a black car drove by and fired one shot.

“Everyone at the scene was lying to the officers,” said Knight. “Saying it was a drive-by shooting but their stories weren’t consistent, they did not add up. Officers realized there was something more going on there.”

Arrest papers indicate the witness came clean and told officers the truth. He said the teens were in a bedroom at Gunn's home when he heard a "pop" and then saw the victim had been shot.

Gunn was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, even though it's believed to have been an accident. 

Police said there were also two younger children at the home and Gunn's parents were not there at the time of the shooting.

“This could have turned out to be a very tragic situation,” said Knight.

Police searched the home and found a backpack with a large amount of meth and pills inside the mother's bedroom. She was later arrested on drug complaints.
