'Kiss Your Mom Goodbye' Tradition Today At Tulsa's Bishop Kelley High

<p>Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa began classes Tuesday with a freshmen annual rite of passage called "Kiss Your Mom Goodbye."</p>

'Kiss Your Mom Goodbye' Tradition Today At Tulsa's Bishop Kelley High

Students at Bishop Kelley returned to school Tuesday, and seniors loudly welcomed the new freshmen with a unique tradition.

"Kiss Your Mom Goodbye" has been a tradition at Bishop Kelley for nearly 20. Seniors cheered on the students as their parents dropped them off, and they found creative ways to tell freshmen to kiss their parents goodbye.

"We had posters, and paint and glitter, and we all just got ready and looked on Pinterest and found different sayings and stuff," senior Natalie Malloy said.

Michael Hughes is a proud member of the Bishop Kelley class of 2022 and was one of the students the got a rock star's greeting when he got out of his dad’s car.

"Just heard a bunch of yelling and two people jumped in front of the car and I kissed my father," he said.

Malloy remembers being in Hughes’ shoes but was glad to be holding the poster this year. She said the tradition is a lot of fun for freshmen and the embarrassment is worth it in the end.

"It's something you look forward to - definitely not as a freshman. You're kind of nervous for it, but once you get up to that point of being the senior, being the one with the poster, it's an exciting tradition. I'm glad we have here at Kelley," Malloy said.

The school said nearly 200 seniors were part of Tuesday's event.
