Yukon City Council Votes To Limit Medical Marijuana Dispensary Locations

Yukon City Council members voted in favor of an ordinance that would keep medical marijuana dispensaries at least 1000 feet from several establishments, during Tuesday night’s meeting.

Those who attended the meeting say the ordinance clearly violates their rights.

“I’m here because I’m concerned the city of Yukon is trying to subvert the plain language of 788,” said resident Kimberly Thomas.

But Yukon City Manager James Crosby says that's not the case at all.

“People act like we’re trying to prohibit sales, we can’t prohibit sales, if someone can find a location to sell it, sell it,” Crosby said.

While state law prohibits medical marijuana dispensaries from operating within 1000 feet of public and private schools, Yukon's new ordinance expands that to include churches, libraries, public playgrounds, daycares, residential areas, and another medical marijuana dispensary.

Angry residents say it's all been done in an effort to force their businesses south of I-40.

“It sounds like you’re trying to run us clear to the other side of town which puts us in Oklahoma City, I would think the city of Yukon would want that revenue,” said one resident during the meeting.

Despite today’s vote, residents say they’ll have the final word.

“We want them to know we are paying attention, we’re going to see who is up for this election and if they continue with this foolery we are going to try and unseat them,” Thomas said.

Despite more than 60 percent of the city voting in favor of 788, the council stated they felt the ordinance was in the best interest of its citizens.
