At a special town board meeting, leaders in Luther went over a draft agreement of sorts for adding a school resource officer.

Board members, the mayor and the town attorney raised several questions about the document — some regarding chain of command, pay and other duties.

Ultimately, the town board moved to go over it all with the school district and bring back any changes.

Police Chief David Randall said it is a step in the right direction.

“At least the dialogue is there to where we have a foundation to where the school board and the town board can get together and they can talk about what direction, how to proceed and move forward,” Chief Randall said.

The conversations come a week after police said a male student stabbed a female student on the first day of school at Luther High. Although, Chief Randall said he’s wanted an SRO in place even before that incident. Now, that process moves forward as both boards work to come to a consensus.

“Once they agree on it, we are ready to put it into action,” Chief Randall said.

Town board members told News 9 they hope to have this process complete as soon as possible - likely within a few months.
