A Tecumseh police officer was arrested and is accused of domestic assault and battery.

Investigators say Jesse McCord, 47, tried to choke his son.

According to the police report, McCord was with his 27-year-old son Taylor, friends and family at Buffalo Wild Wings Friday, August 24. While they were eating and drinking alcohol, the conversation turned to marijuana.

“They were having a conversation that ended up heated and an argument started between them,” explained Cpl. Vivian Lozano-Stafford with the Shawnee Police Department.

“I heard the table scoot and the drinks knock over and everyone started looking over and I turned around, and that’s when I saw them on the ground,” said Emaleh Bryant, their waitress that night. She says she rushed over to try and break up the fight.

“The son was kind of in a squatting position, the dad was over the top of him and kind of had him in a headlock restraint.”

But Taylor told police Jesse leapt out of his chair and put his hands around his neck.

Police say Taylor contacted them Saturday morning and came into the station on Sunday. He provided police with pictures, that officers say, are consistent with strangulation.

McCord was arrested at the Tecumseh Police Department and booked into the Pottawatomie County Jail on charges of domestic assault and battery by strangulation.

But Emaleh says she doesn't believe that's right. “The dad just did what he could to stop the situation from escalating from what it shouldn’t have even been.”

The Tecumseh police chief says McCord has been place on leave as they conduct an administrative investigation.
