Tulsa Pediatrician: What Parents Need To Know About Meningitis

Collinsville school administration confirms a third grader at Herald Elementary has contracted and is being treated for viral meningitis. The principal said classes are in session Tuesday.

They have deep cleaned the school and are stepping up efforts to keep other students safe, according to CPS. 

Tulsa pediatrician Dr. Scott Cyrus appeared on 6 in the Morning to discuss the different types of meningitis and what parents can do to keep their kids healthy.

He said there are two basic forms of meningitis: bacterial and viral.

"By far, the more serious form is bacterial," Dr. Scott Cyrus said. "That's why we have a vaccine for the bacterial."

Viral can still cause complications, but Cyrus said it's generally short lasting. The big thing is getting your child to the doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment, he said.

Watch out for symptoms of headache and stiff neck, fever, sensitivity to bright light, lethargy/sleepiness, nausea or vomiting, lack of appetite and irritability.
