High temperatures today, however, will remain very summer like with readings back into the lower to mid-90s along with heat index values nearing 100.  A few spotty showers or storms will be possible today, but the odds seem to be rather low for the metro and mostly for south-central to far eastern Oklahoma, where these locations will have a 10 to 20-percent chance on the map today.  Rain with some thunder will be increasingly likely Friday into part of Saturday with some pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall likely across at least central to southern Oklahoma.  Temperatures this weekend will cool into the 70s for daytime highs with some locally cooler readings in the 60s possible with rain cooled air, yet no appreciable air mass change will occur until next week.

The upper air pattern will bring a fast-moving trough across the Midwest and great Lakes region today while a smaller disturbance will drop across the central plains later tonight into Friday.  A cold front, currently located to our northwest, will drop across northwestern Oklahoma later tonight and enter our region Friday morning with some rain and storms nearing the area.  The front is expected to pass the metro by midday with overrunning precip moving across eastern Oklahoma by midday to afternoon and evening.  No severe weather is expected across our immediate areas of concern.  Temperatures Friday will top out in the upper 70s north and a few lower 80s south with northeast winds developing around 10 to 20 mph.  By afternoon, it’s possible to see readings in the 60s with rain nearby.  Friday night football games may be wet near and south of the Tulsa metro with games in the 60s.

Saturday rain with some embedded thunder will remain likely during the early morning hours before gradually decreasing north while continuing south.  Temperatures will stay in the 60s for most of the day but may reach the lower 70s by afternoon with clouds and north winds.  I don’t think rain will be constant during the Saturday period, but we’ll need to keep a decent chance for the morning to midday north with likely categories across southern Oklahoma through the evening.  A plume of tropical moisture from the Pacific is likely to remain in place near the boundary creating pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall for some of these locations.  Sunday most of the precip will remain south of the metro but once again, southern Oklahoma may stay in the running for additional showers through the day with highs Sunday reaching the mid to upper 70s.

Monday we’ll be warming back into the 80s, but another strong front will reach the central plains either Tuesday or Wednesday with another chance of showers and storms followed by a noticeable cool down across the plains including Oklahoma by Wednesday through the end of the week.  There will also be a signal for another strong fall front arriving by next weekend that would enforce the cool weather.

Summer weather is likely today but the pattern will be changing soon.

Thanks for reading the Thursday morning weather discussion and blog.
