Oklahoma Business Owners Step Up To Help Family In Need

Jeremiah Mitchell contracted bacterial meningitis eight years ago in Oologah.

Doctors had to amputate his arms and legs to save his life, and he's had many surgeries to repair his face.

We interviewed Jeremiah, who's now a freshman in high school, for a follow-up and while we were at his house, we noticed they needed help with a few things, so we called two Tulsa businessmen and they immediately jumped into action.

The porch at Jeremiah's home has a ramp but no railings, and whether Jeremiah is using his prosthetic legs or his wheelchair, it can be tricky, and not just for him, but for his mother and grandmother, too.

Mike Goodman owns Goodman and Associates, a restoration company, as well as Window World, and he immediately came up with a beautiful, sturdy design and got his crews on the job.

First, they drilled holes in the concrete and set the metal poles, then strung the cable wires. It’s now both functional and attractive.

"People helped me along the way, and the only way to return that favor is be a good neighbor and make sure Tulsa is a great community," Goodman said.

The backyard had become an overgrown mess so they couldn't use or enjoy it, until Chris Giddings, owner of Best Lawn and Landscape agreed to help. He brought a big crew and lots of equipment to transform the yard into a perfectly manicured space again.

"It's not about making money, it's about helping someone else, helping your neighbor," Giddings said.

Jeremiah’s mother, Michaela Mitchell said taking care of her son doesn't leave time for work, and Jeremiah's father passed away a few years ago. He was not only their rock but their helper around the house.

Michaela and Jeremiah are beyond grateful.

"It's amazing. There's so many great people out in the world who are willing to help me," she said.
