Thursday, a town hall meeting to discuss earthquakes, drew a standing room only crowd at UCO in Edmond. State Representative Lewis Moore organized the gathering.

Moore said lawmakers need to give regulators more power to control saltwater wastewater disposal wells that are used in the oil-drilling process.

Mike Terry, President of the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, represents 2,800 oil drilling operations. He said there is a connection between wastewater disposal wells and earthquakes, but all of the earthquake activity in the Edmond area is puzzling.

“Because we just don’t have the volume of disposal wells in the Edmond area, but something is going on,” said Terry.

State Representative Richard Morrissette will host another public meeting on earthquakes Friday, January 15, at the State Capital. It starts at 9 a.m., and News 9 will live stream the entire meeting.
