A 7-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after being attacked by three dogs while waiting for her school bus.

Broken Arrow Police said it happened around 8:30 a.m. in the quiet Bentree neighborhood when the three pitbulls escaped accidentally.

"The dogs had pushed open a glass door of a residence and then became free to roam the neighborhood," Officer James Koch said.

Officer James Koch said a 7-year-old little girl was waiting for the bus to school one morning when two of the three dogs attacked her, one of them, actually biting her.

"Several people had tried to get the dogs off of the child," he said.

At some point, Koch said a neighbor was able to pull the girl free. That's when he says another neighbor shot the dogs at the owner's request.

"The information we have indicates that the actual owner of the dogs told a neighbor to shoot the dogs," Koch said.

Koch says one of the dogs died at the scene, and the other dog was taken to animal control and later euthanized because of its injuries.

The third, less aggressive dog, was surrendered to the animal shelter by the owner and is being quarantined.

"The owner of the dogs is very cooperative with the police department," he said.

Koch said the dog owner received three citations for animal at large, no rabies vaccination, and failure to secure a vicious animal.

He said dog attacks this severe are not common for the department.

"This is a pretty significant injury, a pretty significant incident," Koch said. "It's not one we respond to often."

The neighbor who shot the dog is not facing criminal charges.
