A 13-year-old Okmulgee Public Schools student was taken into custody Friday morning after police said he showed a gun to other students Thursday evening on school property and threatened to shoot them and school staff, OPS said in a news release.

Police said they received a report at about 8:40 p.m. Thursday that the 13-year-old male student had brought a gun onto school property while the town's junior football league was holding practice.

Police said several other students said the teen pulled the handgun out in front of them and threatened to shoot them and also that he would shoot school staff members.

The boys ran and no further incident occurred, police said.

Okmulgee police officers conducted interviews overnight and the student was intercepted by officers Friday morning as he walked to school. They said he was taken into custody and searched but no weapon was found on him or in his backpack. Officers later found a BB gun at the boy's home and it fit the student witnesses' description of the gun, police said.

Police said the BB gun is very similar in appearance to a real firearm and could easily be mistaken for one.

The student is in police custody and is awaiting intake by the Office of Juvenile Affairs, and a report is being submitted to the District Attorney, according to the school.
