An American Airlines jet made an emergency landing at Tulsa International Airport Wednesday afternoon. No one was hurt.

American Airlines Flight 1461 had taken off from Little Rock bound for Dallas at 11:41 a.m. It was an MD-80 with 142 people on board.

The flight crew diverted to Tulsa just a few minutes after takeoff. The crew notified ground controllers that the twin-engine jet was having mechanical issues.

At one point the pilot asked ground controllers for more space because he said the flight crew had limited ability to maneuver the plane.

The airplane did a low pass over the airport so ground controllers could make sure its landing gear was extended properly.

Osage SkyNews 6 pilot Will Kavanagh said the crew lost electronics in the cockpit and was having to do everything by hand. The crew landed the plane successfully on its second approach, while emergency crews waited on the tarmac below.

"The captain elected to get the plane to the ground because of the mechanical emergency," said Matt Miller, American Airlines. It is up to the captain to decide the safest place to do that quickly."

"Tulsa happened to be the airport he chose. Right now the aircraft is at the gate being looked at by maintenance crews. We have not determined if it is a repair that can be made today."

There were 137 passengers and five crew members on board.

The MD-80 is a twin-engine jet originally built by McDonnell-Douglas, which was bought out by Boeing.
