Tulsa Suspends Damaris Johnson Indefinitely

TULSA, Oklahoma –University of Tulsa wide receiver Damaris Johnson has been indefinitely suspended from the Golden Hurricane football team.

This comes after Johnson's girlfriend Chamon Jones was arrested Thursday on a felony embezzlement complaint.

According to officer Leland Ashley of the Tulsa Police Department, Jones, an employee at Macy's department store, was arrested Thursday after she allegedly rang up merchandise at Macy's that totaled $1,238.75 that Johnson allegedly paid a total of $0.34 for.

The police report also alleges that on August 20, Jones rang up merchandise at that totaled $1596.09 and Johnson allegedly paid $12.91 for the merchandise with Jones' debit card.

Officer Ashley said Johnson was interviewed Thursday night and was released pending further investigation.

The University of Tulsa released the following statement on the issue:

"University of Tulsa Head Football Coach Bill Blankenship has indefinitely suspended football student-athlete Damaris Johnson from all team activities pending a university review of information recently received by university officials. The university will not comment further pending completion of this review."

NewsOn6 contacted the Tulsa Police Department requesting the arrest report and received a different version than the report given to the Tulsa World.

Jones has since been released on bond and a court date has been set for September 2, 2011.

Johnson holds the NCAA's all-time records for all-purpose yards with 7,796 yards and for career kickoff return yardage with 3,417 yards. The past two seasons he has led the nation in all-purpose yardage with 202.2 yards per game last year and 224.4 yards per game his sophomore season.

The 21-year-old senior from Norco, Louisiana is a three-year letter winner and starter for Tulsa. He has 29 career touchdowns including 17 receiving and eight rushing.

Tulsa is set to open the season on Sept. 3 against the University of Oklahoma in Norman at 7 p.m.
