Personal Care Businesses In Del City Reopen, Kick Start Governor's Economy Recovery Plan

Personal care businesses in at least five Oklahoma City metro cities reopened on Friday.

Del City is one city that revised its emergency declaration following Gov. Kevin Stitt’s three-phase plan to reopen the economy.

Del City officials said part of the plan requires them to monitor the number of COVID-19 cases. If cases maintain or go down, they will continue to reopen other businesses.

The owner of Corky's Barber Shop in Del City has been anticipating this day for weeks. She opened her shop’s doors Friday morning.

“Eight o’clock and I haven’t stopped,” said Diana Dyer, barber shop owner. “I’ve had to turn people down. It’s really busy, a lot of people out there wanting haircuts.”

But, Dyer had to limit the number of people she can have in the shop at one time. To maintain a safe social distance, she was only taking customers with appointments.

Barber shops were not the only businesses to reopen. Del City officials allowed pet groomers, spas and hair and nail salons to open their doors to the public.

“As long as they adhere to social distancing, they’re sanitizing,” said Maj. Bradley Rule, Del City Police Department. “The personal care stuff will be by appointment to limit the number of people you have.”

Del City joined four other municipalities in a three-phase plan to reopen the economy. Midwest City, Moore, Yukon and Mustang all approved personal care businesses to go back to work on April 24.

Even more non-essential businesses will reopen on May 1.

“Gyms, sporting venues, things along that line. Churches will be allowed to begin in-person services,” said Rule. “Just to try and get us back to as close to normal as we can get.”

People like Dyer could not be happier to be working and serving her community.

“That’s out livelihood,” said Dyer. “That’s our bread and butter. That’s what we do for a living.”

Del City police officers will be doing spot checks while they are on patrol. City officials said that is not to punish residents, but to make sure everyone is safe.
