The City of Tulsa will not be removing the Black Lives Matter Mural on Greenwood Ave on Monday, according to City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper.

The city had planned to start the removal process sometime Monday but never specified a time. The giant letters spelling out “Black Lives Matter” were painted overnight right before Juneteenth and President Trump's campaign rally. The city says they received requests to allow other messages on other streets. The city says they did not approve a permit for this mural on Greenwood, but they say if they don’t remove it then they’re condoning the painting as if there was an approved permit.

A large crowd has gathered in Tulsa's Greenwood District to stand up for the mural. Doctor Tiffany Crutcher says they plan to stay for several hours and have placed boxes over the mural to represent the headstones of the 1921 Race Massacre victims as well as those killed by law enforcement.

City leaders say they will work on an ordinance to ban murals like this in the future.
