Dozens Of Dogs Rescued After Being Found Living In Horrible Conditions

Dozens of dogs were found in horrible conditions at a home in rural Pottawatomie County. There are so many they have to be housed at The Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center in Shawnee.

Rescuers were able to get 33 of the dogs from the property in Prague. The conditions were filthy with the dogs living in mud and feces, fighting over scraps of food.  

“They’re all in very bad shape to be honest,” said Maeghan Olsen with 1 Day Ranch. “They’re severely malnourished. We have some very weird skin issues that our vet is currently doing testing to find out what it is. And then we have almost 20 dogs that have Entropion which is an eye condition which is usually genetic, and it’s caused because these dogs have all been inbreeding for so long that almost all of them have these major genetic problems.”

The owners called for help, now realizing the dogs have become too much for them to handle.

“There was a moment of clarity when they realized that this was unacceptable. That the conditions were unacceptable. And they needed help,” Olsen said.

But helping these dogs will be a challenge.

“We are dealing with a lot of behavior issues as well because of the fact that these dogs have been completely unsocialized other than the owners of the property. They have never seen other people. We dealt with a lot of aggression. A lot of bites,” Olsen said.

Folks who want to volunteer to work with the dogs can contact 1 Day Ranch and hopefully help some of these dogs become adoptable.

“They don’t know how to be a dog. Most of these dogs are mostly feral. They’re wild dogs at this point,” Olsen said.
