Tulsa Police arrested a man accused of killing his girlfriend and her 16-year-old niece.

Police said thanks to the courage of a 13-year-old girl, who called 911 during the shooting, the other three children inside the home were spared.

The family said Chantel Dean and Howard Peeples had just had a baby together two months ago, and now she’s gone, along with her niece Na’veha Alexander.

The family said Na'veha Alexander turned 16 just two weeks ago. They said she was babysitting for her aunt, Chantel Dean, when Dean’s boyfriend, Howard Peeples, started shooting.

They said a 13-year-old child hid in a closet during the shooting and called 911. Officers said there were three other kids at home at the time, ranging from infants to early teens.

"We don't want to see homicides in general but when there are children; it really affects us. A lot of our officers have children. To see a child that is deceased, it is really hard on us. It's hard on us, but we also go in there and do our job, we do it right, we do it to the best of our ability, in order to get the individual who killed that child off the street,” said Officer Jeanne Pierce with Tulsa Police Department:

TPD said the Fugitive Squad and Homicide Detectives tracked down Peeples about a mile away.

TPD said this was quick work by detectives, who are already stretched thin because this is the third homicide in the last 12 hours.

"We had 63 homicides last year, so our homicides are up. Most of our homicides are known suspects. They know the victim. They have a relationship with them, whether it be drugs, dating, married, or friends. There's not a lot of stranger crime going on right now,” said Officer Pierce.

Records show Peeples has prior convictions for child abuse and weapons charges. Peeples spent nine months in prison for the weapons charges.
