OKC Vigil To Be Held This Weekend In Remembrance Of Tulsa Race Massacre

A metro business is giving Oklahoma City the chance this weekend to commemorate 100 years since the Tulsa Race Massacre.

The vigil starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Nappy Roots Books near Northeast 36th and Kelley.

Anyone who wants to attend is encouraged to bring flowers and candles to place on the altar of remembrance that will be there.

Nappy Roots Books owner Camille Landry said this weekend's vigil is be held a little after the 100-year anniversary because they wanted to respect the events happening in Tulsa last week. Secondly, the effects of the Tulsa Race Massacre lasted much longer than the first few days of June.

Landry emphasized Saturday's vigil is a time to really focus on what happened in Tulsa.

"The spotlight is not in Oklahoma City with this,” Landry said. “This is Oklahoma City standing in solidarity with the people of Greenwood who are folks who suffered the most.”  

This weekend's vigil will include multiple community leaders, including Oklahoma City councilwoman Nikki Nice and NAACP OKC chapter president Garland Pruitt.
